Weight Loss Glossary - Cholesterol

Cholesterol (ko-LES-te-rol)

A fat-like substance that is made by the body and is found naturally in animal foods such as meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. Foods high in cholesterol include liver and organ meats, egg yolks, and dairy fats. Cholesterol is carried in the blood. When cholesterol levels are too high, some of the cholesterol is deposited on the walls of the blood vessels. Over time, the deposits can build up causing the blood vessels to narrow and blood flow to decrease. The cholesterol in food, like saturated fat, tends to raise blood cholesterol, which increases the risk for heart disease. Total blood cholesterol levels above 240 mg/dl are considered high. Levels between 200-239 mg/dl are considered borderline high. Levels under 200 mg/dl are considered desirable.

Weight Loss Glossary - Carbohydrate

Carbohydrate (kar-bow-HIGH-drate)

A major source of energy in the diet. There are two kinds of carbohydrates @ simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbohydrates are sugars and complex carbohydrates include both starches and fiber. Carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram. They are found naturally in foods such as breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, and milk and dairy products. Foods such as sugar cereals, soft drinks, fruit drinks, fruit punch, lemonade, cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream, and candy are very rich in sugars.

Weight Loss Glossary - Body mass index (BMI)

Body mass index (BMI)

A measure of body weight relative to height. BMI can be used to determine if people are at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. To figure out BMI, use the following formula:

Weight in pounds x 703 / Height in Inches x Height in Inches = BMI

A body mass index (BMI) of 18.5 up to 25 refers to a healthy weight, a BMI of 25 up to 30 refers to overweight and a BMI of 30 or higher refers to obese.

Weight Loss Glossary - Bioelectrical impedance analysis

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) (im-PEE-dance)

A way to estimate the amount of body weight that is fat and nonfat. Nonfat weight comes from bone, muscle, body water, organs, and other body tissues. BIA works by measuring how difficult it is for a harmless electrical current to move through the body. The more fat a person has, the harder it is for electricity to flow through the body. The less fat a person has, the easier it is for electricity to flow through the body. By measuring the flow of electricity, one can estimate body fat percent.

Weight Loss Glossary - Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery (bear-ee-AT-ric)

Surgery on the stomach and/or intestines to help the patient with extreme obesity lose weight. Bariatric surgery is a weight-loss method used for people who have a body mass index (BMI) above 40. Surgery may also be an option for people with a BMI between 35 and 40 who have health problems like heart disease or type 2 diabetes.

Hey we all know that our world appears to be full of people who look fabulous no matter what they wear, eat and drink. The body image that they portray is that its so easy to stay looking marvellous. However its worth bearing in mind that for many of these movie stars, celebs etc not only do they spend a lot of time but also a huge amount of money on maintaining the “image”.

Motivate Yourself Losing weight quickly can be a great motivator and there are many plans out there offering weight loss in 1 or 2 weeks. But do bear in mind that quick fix diets like “lose weight in one week “ will need for you to control the amount of food intake and the sort of foods you'll eat. Some of these plans can be considered “extreme” and whilst done for a short time and providing you integrate some healthy food options. Like the “5 a day rule” over fruit and vegetables are OK, they are not considered ideal for the longer term.

These “lose weight in one week” diets that you will find being mentioned will include the Zone, South Beach diet, Weight Watchers and others. In each of these diet programs you will be provided with a list of foods that you can eat in order to lose weight. These foods which are on the list may provide you with a rapid weight loss, but you will still need to work some more in order to lose weight in one week

Find Out About “Rapid Weight Loss” Foods There are certain foods which can be found on diet lists which may promote a rapid loss of weight.

Before deciding check out some of the example recipes and meal plans which can be found with the various diets. The internet should provide you with interesting meal plans

Exercise is Vital However you consider it, to lose weight we need to burn calories " exercise is necessary to do this, so a combination of a “lose weight in a week” plan and an exercise routine will work together to achieve your goals. Some fat burning exercise workouts can be used as well, check on the internet where you'll find many such plans.

.You should always get your doctor’s advice once you have this program all drawn up. make sure that you get your doctor to recommend an amount of food that you can eat of while you are on the program. That will maintain your overall health at the right level..From this discussion its quite possible your doctor will be able to give you other advice which may help with your goal of losing weight.

You will find that you can lose weight quickly using different and combined strategies. These strategies must incorporate some different exercise routines as well.

Weight Loss Can Be Painful

Weight Loss Articles : Weight Loss Can Be Painful. by Richard

Use : http://www.eezywealth.com/desertburn.HTML
The majority of people are extremely self conscious about their appearance. This is especially more so for people that are a little more than just overweight. Besides your physical appearance, being overweight can mean suffering from all sorts of aches and pains. This can include joint pain, back pain, pain from indigestion, headache pain, and cramps in the stomach. What many people do not realize is that crash dieting and fast weight loss using unnatural products can cause even more pain. A factor that should never be forgotten is that there is simply no fool proof fast weight loss technique. Losing your excess weight should be a gradual process just the way that you gained it. If you are going to crash diet you are certainly going to cause yourself more pain in more ways than one.

Sensible weight loss without pain.

Before you go on a diet it is sensible to consult with your doctor for advice and recommendations of the best products that can be used for your weight loss. One of the most stunning weight loss supplements known to man is certainly Pure Hoodia Gordonii that comes from South Africa. This is an appetite suppressant that allows you to enjoy weight loss that is gradual without cramps, pain or cravings and the result is new eating habits are formed. This is the most important aspect of Hoodia Gordonii of all. Beware of counterfeit products though because there are more fakes than the real Hoodia Gordonii unfortunately.

Use this helpful advice to lose weight.

First of all you should choose the type of weight loss supplement that you prefer be it a fat binder, appetite suppressant, or SAFE metabolism booster which are just a few examples of what's out there. (My bets are still on Pure Hoodia Gordonii which guarantees weight loss but the choice here is personal.) Your mindset is important, as well as getting exercise while losing weight, but this does not mean gym contracts or machines. Just becoming a little more active is good enough for starters especially if you are a very sedentary person. Walking the dog, going to the park, and even house cleaning, are all activities that burn off those calories.

Your second piece of advice is to set some realistic goals for yourself. When people try and lose weight and see that it is going real slow they are quick to throw in the towel in frustration. Do not lose focus and think of the end rewards, like perhaps an outfit you want to fit into, health benefits, or the planned beach vacation.

Pay Attention to your body while losing weight. Everyone's metabolism reacts differently to losing weight. If you start feeling pain then find out why by checking with your doctor. If the weight loss supplements have side effects of any type that are undesirable stop using them immediately. These are alarm signals going off in your body trying to tell you something. Where exercise is concerned as mentioned above; start out real slow and build your fitness levels just like you are going to lose weight, one step at a time.

Eat lots of roughage and fiber rich foods, because this fills you up. There are some delicious energy bars and cereals and even breads that are acceptable like whole-wheat loafs. Fiber is also excellent for digestion as well. To top it off grain products are converted to sugar so you will also feel more energetic.

Lastly try and limit your intakes of oily and fried foods because this is where you will pick up the fats you really don't want. If you are using an appetite suppressant like Pure Hoodia Gordonii from South Africa you will not even be tempted by delicious smells. Stick to tasty chicken and fish that is grilled not friend in a delicious sauce with a delectable side salad and a whole wheat slice of bread. These are all good foods for weight loss.

When you are on a diet drinking plenty of water and fluids is important. You have no doubt heard this repeated till you are sick of it but it is true and very necessary. Your body needs to stay well hydrated because this is how it can get rid of wastes and the fats that need to be expelled from your body. Applying a little common sense and some discipline will help you achieve your goals. Choose gradual weight loss than a fad diet or supplements that promise quick results. You will end up in a nasty spiral of Yo-Yo dieting which can even kill you and will certainly lead to depression as well from failure!

Anti Aging Diets

Weight Loss Articles : Anti Aging Diets by Carson Danfield

For ages, humans have been trying to defy Father Time and Mother Nature. Eternal youth is a myth but you can definitely defy old age with an effective anti aging diet. And contrary to popular belief, anti aging diets do not mean starving yourself.

A strict adherence to any anti aging diet not only delays aging, but also prevents a large number of diseases and the ensuing stress and fatality. Such a diet plan is guaranteed to make you look younger and stay healthy too.

Anti aging diets are actually a form of calorie restriction. However, it is fundamentally different from the numerous fad diets that are featured in the newspaper daily. In these diet programs, you eat less overall and keep a tab on the amount of fats and carbohydrates you are consuming.

How you keep a check on the calories is up to you. You can skip your lunch, or gorge on all kinds of foods for a few days and then go hungry the other days of the week or you can limit your food intake on all days of the week.

The anti aging diet plan maintains a fine line between consuming less and being starved. That means you don't compromise on the essential nutrients by having more of anti aging food like fruits, vegetables and fishes.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, except avocadoes, coconuts and olives, are storehouses of essential vitamins and minerals. They're low on calories and devoid of fat, cholesterol and sodium, the culprits behind coronary diseases, diabetes and hypertension.

The anti aging diet program also emphasizes the intake of fruits and vegetables, since they contain antioxidants in large measures. Antioxidants induce longevity by countering free oxygen radicals, which erode cell membranes and life-nourishing proteins. Antioxidants also stem the neural degeneration that comes with senility. It's no wonder that the National Cancer Institute recommends a daily anti aging diet of five fruit and vegetable portions. But the more, the merrier.

You can't banish fat entirely from your diet, but the anti aging diet plan counsels that fish be the source of this fat. The omega-3 fatty acids contained therein, inhibit the growth of cancerous cells, stimulate the immune system, reduce the chances of cardiac arrest and ward off depression.

Anti aging diet has caught on like nothing else and people are already swooning over the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet. Both are essentially low carbohydrate diets.

While the Atkins Diet is formulated on the principle that when you are running low on carbs, the body is left with no other choice but to burn the fat, the South Beach Diet recommends complex carbs, which take time to break down so that you have less sugar cravings.

The hype surrounding anti aging diet seems justified for nothing less than your health is at stake.

9 Pounds Every 11 Days? Don't let yourself be fooled

Weight Loss Articles : 9 Pounds Every 11 Days? Don't let yourself be fooled by Lisa Nelson, RD, LN

Losing weight is not easy, so when you see a headline like the one above you want to believe it can be done. Unfortunately, I am here to tell you it is not that simple.

This article was triggered by the following question:

"hi... when you have time, will you check out fatloss4idiots and see if you think it's for real? I saw this link advertised off to the side, was curious and looked at it... you have to pay to see the diet but they explain how it's supposed to work and was wondering if it sounds legit to you...."

If one person has this question, I am sure many of you do, too. I am going to give you the tools you need to spot what's known as a "fad diet" on your own.

Fad Diet Defined

A fad diet is an eating plan that quickly surges in popularity and tends to just as quickly fizzle out.

Most fad diets are unbalanced meal plans that lead to weight gain when you go off the diet.

Fad diets tend to be cyclical. For example, the Atkins diet was created in the 1970's and made a recent comeback.

Fad Diet Identified

Ask yourself the following 11 questions when evaluating a diet program.

- Does it promise a quick fix?
- Do the claims sound too good to be true?
- Is a list of "good" and "bad" foods given?
- Are recommendations made to help sell a product?
- Does it list dire warnings of dangers from a single product or regimen?
- Are the recommendations based on a single study?
- Do you have to eliminate one or more of the five food groups to gain promised results?
- Are simple conclusions drawn from a complex study?
- Are there dramatic statements refuted by reputable scientific organizations?
- Are the recommendations based on studies not reviewed by other researchers?
- Do the claims ignore differences among individuals or groups?

If the answer is "yes" to any of these questions, then you are probably dealing with a fad diet.

When you review fatloss4idiots, you will see quick fix promises, claims that sound too good to be true, and very little information related to the science behind why the plan works.

Fad Diet Examples

There are hundreds of fad diets on the market. Here are some common examples:

Atkins Cabbage Soup Diet 3 Day Diet South Beach Diet Grapefruit Diet Macrobiotic Diet Low Carb Diet Zone Diet

Successful Plans

A good plan will teach you to make healthy food choices (everything in moderation), along with an activity component. Weight loss and physical activity go hand in hand.

Stop thinking - "diet". A "diet" implies short term changes. If you want to be successful with weight loss you need to find a plan you can stick with long term. Start focusing on next year instead of next month. Successful weight loss requires change and change is never easy. You need to start with small, permanent steps to achieve long-term weight loss.

Bottom line:

If it sounds too good to be true - it is!

Lemonade Diet vs. Other Fad Diets

Weight Loss Articles : Lemonade Diet vs. Other Fad Diets by Brian Bandler

There have been many diets recommended by various parties claiming to be effective and promising things that sound too good to be true. However, the definition of a fad diet is simply one that gains and loses popularity very rapidly. Some fad diets include the Atkins Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, the Negative Calorie Diet, the Low Fat Diet, the 3 Day Diet and the Low Carb Diet, to name a few.

The Lemonade Diet is a short term diet that is meant to serve as a detoxification routine, allowing your digestive system to take a break whilst burning excess fat stores as well. The idea for the Lemonade Diet was proposed by Stanley Burroughs in 1976, and is also known as the Master Cleanser Diet. The Lemonade Diet usually lasts 10 days, with a 3 month break before resuming the diet. It is a very strict procedure that allows only the intake of lemonade. Hence, this diet is known also as a cleansing diet or a juice fast.

When on the Lemonade Diet, it is crucial that you consume approximately 12 glasses of lemonade each day. This lemonade has to be made specifically with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, and 1/6 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. This provides your body with approximately 100 calories per glass, or 1200 calories a day.

In addition to the lemonade, you are allowed to consume only water or peppermint tea to prevent dehydration. The diet begins with a glass of salt water flush in the morning, followed by the consumption of lemon juice throughout the day, as your only source of energy. It ends the day with a glass of laxative tea. When you wish to get back to your normal diet, it is important that you go through the ending process to allow your system to readjust. This necessitates a gradual shift to raw fruits and vegetables for approximately 3 days.

Bear in mind that whilst weight loss will occur with the Lemonade Diet, it may not be healthy, and the diet is used mainly for detoxification purposes. It is not recommended as a weight loss regime, and if used for long periods of time may lead to fat storage. It is also not suitable for children, or people with health problems. Due to the nature of the Lemonade Diet being similar to a fast, you may experience symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and nausea. It is recommended to embark on this diet with a professional or with medical advice, and if the symptoms are too severe the diet should end prematurely.

Whilst the Lemonade Diet will kick start your weight loss plan, it should be viewed as a detoxification routine and not a diet plan. Any weight loss during the diet is a result of fasting, and the weight loss is easily gained back if one is not careful. Maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle is crucial to maintaining your weight after you complete the diet.

Great Results With the South Beach Diet

South Beach Diet Weight Loss Articles : Great Results With the South Beach Diet by Thomas H.

When you put on too much weight it can dramatically reduce the quality of your health and life in general. So when weight gain happens to most people, they seek out diets to get that weight down. And there are so many diets to choose from. Some want money to buy their special menus and others have requirements that cannot be consistently met. What is their result? They fail?simple as that. If you have to go to a specialty health food store to buy the proper food for a diet you will find it to be very expensive and unsustainable because it wrecks your budget. If you have to cut out carbohydrates or things you like to eat from your diet forever you will soon grow weary and go back to eating them?another diet failed. But there is a diet that gives you some balance and doctors recommend it quite often: The South Beach Diet.

The South Beach Diet was designed by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston who set out to create a diet that was both safe and effective. The diet is a solution to the problem of insulin resistance in a person who eats a lot of foods with what is called a high-glycemic index. Eating too much bread, potatoes, candy, and foods with processed sugar can create what is known as insulin resistance syndrome. This syndrome interferes with insulin's ability to process fat and sugars therefore the person puts on more weight.

So the starting point with this diet is a period of two weeks when these high-glycemic foods are cut out of the diet in an attempt to force the body to lose its insulin resistance. This reduction in insulin resistance should cause the body to start burning stored fat and the person will start to experience significant weight loss in a short time. This is phase one of the diet. The person in phase one will eat three normal meals a day consisting of meat, fish, cheese (low-fat), vegetables, and eggs. Snacks between the noon and evening meals are required and can consist of products like nuts or cheese sticks. It is estimated that a person will lose between 8 and 12 pounds during this phase.

This is probably the most difficult part of the diet as one can go through periods of feeling weak and dizzy as their body adjusts to the absence of carbohydrates. Also, because the person has to do without many fruits and vegetables, there may be some vitamin deficiencies. Plus, the absence of bread in the diet can result in fiber deficiencies. So you may have to take some vitamin and fiber supplements.

Phase two of the diet consists of introducing small amounts of the forbidden foods (like bread) back into the diet. Weight loss should continue during this phase and the goal is to keep losing 1 to 2 pounds per week until the dieter achieves the desired target weight.

Once the target weight is achieved, phase three or the maintenance phase begins and the dieter needs to maintain a balanced diet. Monitoring the weight is still important because if it starts to climb again the dieter returns to phase one.

Beyond the South Beach Diet - How to Cook Low-Carb Long Term

Weight Loss South Beach Diet Articles : Beyond the South Beach Diet - How to Cook Low-Carb Long Term by Stephanie Larkin

The South Beach Diet is one of the most popular diets in decades. All over the world, people are taking off weight by stripping carbs and, in the process, learning to eat healthier meals. One of the true beauties of South Beach is that it teaches you a whole new way of eating for a healthier, happier lifestyle. Eating healthy the South Beach way requires an adjustment in your cooking styles, too, though. Once you learn to cook low-carb, you'll find it easier to maintain your new weight and your new healthier lifestyle. Here are some tips to help you put it all together.
1. Invest in a good cookbook.
The third phase of the South Beach diet is a lifetime maintenance plan that lets you eat a wide variety of healthy foods. If your recipe repertoire was based on high-fat meals with creamy sauces and processed foods, you'll need to build up a stock of new recipes. The South Beach Diet book is a good start. It contains a lot of easy to cook recipes that will get you started on building a new repertoire of healthy meals. You'll also find dozens of South Beach cookbooks on the market that will give you some ideas on the best ways to put your new-found food savvy to use.

2. Think fresh!
Processed foods are the very antithesis of healthy low-carb eating. Even processed meats are packed with fillers that add in carbs and calories without offering anything in the way of nutrition. Try to shop the outside aisles of the supermarket - fresh fruits and veggies, meats and dairy - and avoid all the filler meals in between.

3. Learn simple cooking methods.
Learning to cook the South Beach way is surprisingly simple - a lot simpler than the techniques you probably use for cooking now. Steaming, poaching, braising, roasting and grilling involve very little prep time. If a recipe calls for dredging in flour or dusting with breadcrumbs, throw it out. You'll learn a whole new appreciation for real, whole foods when you cook them simply.

4. Color your plate pretty.
A healthy plate is full of vibrant, brilliant colors. When you prepare a plate for yourself, think in color. Deep green, dark orange and bright red vegetables are low in healthy carbohydrates, minerals and vegetables. White potatoes, rice and breads are not. Your best bet is to eat your veggies when they're at their peak of color - before overcooking robs them of their minerals and vitamins.

5. Spice it up!
Spices are a great way to brighten up flavors in your foods. There's a whole world of spices at your fingertips, and learning to use them can really wake up your plate and your palate. Learning about the spices used in various regional cuisines can help you turn a meal from bland to POW with just a few shakes of the spice bottle. Some spices and spice combinations to try are:

Curry isn't just for Indian food anymore. A sprinkle of curry (use a light hand!) can really wake up the flavor in a fresh fruit salad, especially when you add a dab of vanilla.
Cinnamon is an unusual and delicious spice addition to chicken dishes.
Lemon grass oil adds a tart edge to salads and vegetables. Just a dash added to the olive oil when you sauté chicken also brightens the flavor and really wakes up your taste buds.
Rosemary gives everything an earthy, sharp flavor that is the perfect foil for poultry and pork.
6. Add a little garnish to your life.
Garnishes are more than just pretty things on your plate. Fresh herbs, slices of fruit and strips of raw vegetable are more than a treat for your eyes. They add a healthy balance to your diet as well. Choose edible garnishes - a slice of lemon can be squeezed over fish or chicken to brighten flavors, for instance.

The most important things to remember about cooking low-carb for the long term are these:

Skip the white foods. They're almost always processed
Cook simply. Cooking low carb is usually quick, easy and uncomplicated.
Use olive oil for dressings and sautéing.
Get colorful. The more color there is on your plate, the healthier your meal will be.

Weight Loss Strategies

Diet Articles : Weight Loss Strategies by Felicity

The most popular thing that America talks and actually worries about today is obesity. Are you overly concerned with your weight? Are you completely tired of all these programs that seem to never work out for you? Or are you just beginning to start to look for a program? Here are the top three weight loss programs that have helped millions of Americans lose weight.

1.Weight Watcher’s Program- a program that allows you to eat anything you want. You say “Ok, what’s the catch?” I say, the catch is that you are allowed a certain number of points you can “eat” weekly. Every imaginable food is on the points list and all you have to do is count your points.

2.South Beach Diet- this program gives you a full three meals a day and even allows for snacks. The “catch” here is throwing out your bad carbohydrates.

3.Atkins Diet- This program calls for absolutely no carbohydrates at all. The philosophy behind this is that once the body has burned all the carbohydrates it can find, it then begins to burn the excess fat, making you loose weight quickly and efficiently.

Ok, so you have heard of all of these programs, and aren’t interested in them. Well, there is always the good old Jenny Craig, Curves, and other fitness programs. Also, you may just find that making up your own diet and exercise program that fits your needs and schedule works the best for you. In fact, this might just be the way to go!

Top 10 Diets

Weight Loss Articles : Top 10 Diets by Robert Crawley

The following article is going to explain you regarding the top 10 diets now out there in the world. The following information is un subjective view on the top 10 diets available that I found through a couple hours of googling and sorting through the advertisements.

Here they are...

Top 10 Diets

Top 10 Diets #1.)Fat Loss 4 Idiots - This extremely effective program has been one of the most successful weight loss programs of all time. Using the idea of calorie shifting fat loss for idiots makes losing weight extremely easy.

Top 10 Diets #2.)Weight watchers - an effective weight loss program because you have an excellent support system, an easily trackable point system, and and it is pretty inexpensive.

Top 10 Diets #3.)Atkins Diet - a diet that cuts your carb intake to less than 20g/day, which is extremely low. This diet is effective, but it is extremely uneasy to cut carbs that low. Your favorite foods are probably carb loaded... on the plus side, you can eat some of your favorite "unhealthy foods".

Top 10 Diets #4.)The Zone diet - another low carb type diet, but the book basically tells you what you should already know - exercise and eat healthy. Most reviewers of this diet state its hard to follow but results are sufficient. One good thing... it doesn't cost much as it is just a book to buy.

Top 10 Diets #5. )South Beach Diet - The South Beach diet is another low carb diet that is easier to follow and more permissive than Atkins. It focuses on eating the 'right' carbs, such as whole grains and certain fruits and vegetables; the right fats, such as olive and canola oil; and lean sources of protein.

As shown above, the top 10 diets start off with 3 low carb diets... Low carb diets work if followed, but they are hard to follow without quitting. Staying with your diet program, whichever you choose is the best way to lose the pounds you want to lose, so the idea is the easier the diet, the better success you will have as you can stick to it the longest.
