Weight Loss Articles : What is the Quickest Way to Lose Weight in a healthy Way by M. van Anken
With the spring and summer seasons coming up, many are already worried about the extra pounds that have appeared during the winter season. Soon the t-shirts and bathing suits will be coming out, but since there is nobody who wants to be heavier than the year before then something will have to be done. This is when you start contemplating about things like what is the quickest way to lose weight. There are in fact many effective methods to lose weight relatively quickly, however, to try to lose substantial amounts in only a couple of weeks is not very reasonable nor is it very healthy. The best bet would be to do research on the different types of diets, choose the one that most suits your lifestyle and then stick to it for a long period of time.
When asked what is the quickest way to lose weight, most experts will stay with the tried and true methods of reduced calories, reduced fat and smaller portions. This means that you restrict calorie intake to a maximum of 1,500 on a daily basis and only eat fat free or low fat foods. This can work, but it is important to then ensure sufficient vitamins and minerals and watch the protein and carbohydrate intake, since a calorie and fat restricted diet alone not only results in weight loss, but also loss of muscle and important fluids like water.
Other methods for weight loss include the many systems offered through central companies, such as Slim Fast, South Beach Diet, Weight Watchers or Nutrisystem. These all have their success stories and promote an overall healthy eating habit. Weight Watchers is especially famous for helping people lose weight and keep it off through their point system which actually allows for a daily portion of dessert or a snack for munching on. These systems help you structure your meals and control calorie and fat intake while keeping nutrition in mind. The backside of these plans is the cost. Some require a monthly membership fee and all of them have special pre-made meals that you have to eat and which can cost hundreds of dollars each month. Another plan that does not require the purchasing of meal sets is the Atkins diet. But what is the quickest way to lose weight ? This is solely based on the limitation of carbohydrates, but allows as many fats and proteins as you want. Many have actually noticeably lost weight within weeks of starting this diet, however, many forget that there are good and bad fats. Eating saturated fats without watching the amount consumed results often in heart disease and other health conditions, so caution has to be taken. Maybe this is one answer of what is the quickest way to lose weight.
Finally, there are geographically specific diets. There are the Chinese or Mediterranean diets which mean that you basically copy the way those cultures eat and prepare their foods. This involves lots of olive oil, vegetables and eating the main meal at midday instead of in the evening. In the long term, this has proven to not only be slimming, but also very healthy.
When deciding on what is the quickest way to lose weight, there are many options. However, the best diet will not be effective if daily exercise is excluded. So whatever you did, combine improved eating habits with more movement and the weight will disappear. What is the quickest way to lose weight is in your mind.

Start Your Diet Off Right
Weight Loss Articles : Start Your Diet Off Right by Christie Love
If you decide to go on a diet, this article is crucial to your success. Saying the word “Diet†can lead to hysteria in many. You may want to lose weight, but may not want to take the necessary steps to making your ideal weight a reality. Most people stick to a diet for a short time, thinking it will work miracles on their figure only to be let down by another diet plan. But, in reality, it was them that “fell off the bandwagon†that lead to their unsuccessful results.
In order for a diet to be effective, you must understand your main cause that you are going on the diet in the first place. However, if you find that the cause is not strong enough, then most likely you will not succeed and may easily stray off the dieting path believing that yet another diet does not work, when it could just be your lack of well-power.
After you’ve established the reason why you are on a diet plan to begin with, and have built a strong foundation to support your new endeavor, you’ll want to choose a diet that has a “normal maintenance†plan to follow after the diet is complete. A “normal maintenance†plan will help you to maintain your weight loss goals. Make note that the maintenance plan should be very similar to the way you ate before going on the diet by replacing previous unhealthy choices with healthy alternatives, of course. Being on restricted diets for too long will cause you to FAIL; miserably. That’s why it’s important to revert back to a similar yet healthier eating practices that you are accustom to.
When transforming from your diet to a livable, normal maintenance plan (after you’ve reached your desired weight) consider the following to make sure that you don’t gain all the weight back again.
• Don’t restrict your calories less than 1000 calories per day. This can cause your body to go into starvation mode and slow down your metabolism considerably. When you return to eating normal, your body will store it all as fat; causing your weight to skyrocket.
• Don’t eliminate one or more entire food groups for long periods of time. Cutting out an entire food group deprives your body of its natural ingredients. However, there are times when you want to jump start your metabolism and cutting down or cutting out a particular food group but only for a day or so. Eliminating vital nutrients may not cause major problems in short spurts, but doing this too long can pose a hindrance on your health.
Author’s Note: If you are looking for a highly reputably diet plan, then perhaps you may want to try the South Beach Diet. Give it a try. How The South Beach Diet Works
Weight Loss South Beach Diet Articles : How The South Beach Diet Works by Alan Densky
The South Beach diet plan is among the most widely used methods of losing weight today. It is styled around lifestyle and diet changes that help you steadily lose weight. By avoiding "bad" fats and carbohydrates and having plenty of "good" ones, dieters can take weight off without sacrificing their health or feeling deprived.
There are three phases in the South Beach diet. During phase one, dieters do not eat any carbohydrates except for vegetables. Although many foods are banned, dieters still have a variety of foods they can eat. The first phase is the toughest phase, but also the quickest since it only takes fourteen days. Dieters are expected to lose between 8 to 12 pounds during this phase.
In phase two, dieters begin reintroducing the previously restricted carb-rich foods into their meals. Dieters can expect to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week while slowly increasing the amount of carbohydrates in their diet. Phase two lasts until dieters attain their target weight.
Phase three is the maintenance phase. Dieters use their strategies they learned from phase two to maintain their goal weight throughout the rest of their lives. If dieters begin to regain weight, they may revert back to phase one of the diet.
It is likely that you've seen pre-packaged South Beach meals and snacks in the grocery store. These items are convenient, but you do not need to buy them in order to be on the diet. You just need to commit to the different general guidelines for each phase of the diet.
During the first phase of the diet, you can consume lean cuts of meat, such as turkey, chicken, and fish, eggs, most vegetables, nuts, and a small quantity of dairy products. Fruits and their juices are avoided during this phase because of their sugar content. Also banned are all carbohydrates, fatty meats, alcohol, and a few vegetables that may have high sugar content, such as beets. The goal of this phase is to cut "bad" carbohydrates from your diet and start the process of losing weight.
During the second phase, dieters gradually reintroduce fruit, whole grains, and other formerly prohibited foods into their diet. In the process, dieters learn how to balance their diet to maintain a desirable weight. Once this is successfully accomplished, the diet switches into the lifetime maintenance phase, in which dieters attempt to maintain the healthy habits that helped them reach their target weight.
The factor for success with the South Beach diet plan is committing to eating healthy. Although that sounds simple, the South Beach diet program and other diet plans fail because dieters give up before the program can take effect. The problems that most dieters have with weight loss often stem from deeper issues such as a lack of inspiration to lose weight, a habit of overeating, or an inability to control the appetite. The good thing is that all of these issues are treatable with techniques that anyone can learn from a good hypnosis weight loss CD program.
To remedy a lack of motivation, practices from a tool called Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) will help give you a powerful desire to stay on track with your dieting goals.
First, dieters identify precisely what it is that is most valuable to them, as an individual. This is called their "highly valued criteria." Then, NLP techniques are applied to make the dieters feel that by losing weight, their highly valued criteria will benefit greatly. An alternative is to make the dieter feel that if they do not lose weight, their most valued criteria will be placed in jeopardy.
Motivation is produced by what we believe, not by logic! So in the previous case, let's say that the dieter's most highly valued wish is that the dieter's children are safe and happy. Using an NLP tool called Submodalities, we can lead the dieter into believing that if he/she is unable to lose weight, the children will be condemned to emulating their parent and they will be overweight and dissatisfied. This belief will give a strong desire and feeling to stick to a diet and get the weight off.
Other NLP techniques can help to reduce or even entirely remove the urges and cravings that cause one to eat too much. This works very well to help dieters stick to the initial and most challenging weeks of the South Beach diet. Additionally, it helps dieters commit to an exercise program, which will increase the effectiveness of any diet.
Stress is a factor that often drives people to eat too much or neglect their health, but stress-relief is offered by both hypnosis and NLP techniques. One such tool is called the NLP Flash. With the NLP Flash, having the unconscious use stressful thoughts to prompt you to have relaxing thoughts gets rid of the stress that triggers the desire to eat too much.
Unmanageable eating habits often cause people to gain weight. Countless people have seemingly uncontrollable appetites because over the years, they have unconsciously developed a "conditioned response" to eat in certain situations. For instance, many of us eat in front of the television even though we aren't truly even hungry. The good thing is, hypnosis and NLP have techniques that can quickly eliminate these conditioned responses. These techniques eliminate the appetite without drugs or pills.
By targeting the root obstacles that keep people from losing weight, NLP and hypnosis has helped many dieters finally get fit and slim for life. Combined with the South Beach diet, dieters may experience natural weight loss and success at reaching their fitness goals.

Is There An Acne Cure Diet That Works?
Weight Loss Articles : Is There An Acne Cure Diet That Works? by Alisia Friend
Acne Diet and The Money Factor: You Can't Sell a Healthy Diet
Ask any medical doctor if there is a connection between diet and acne and almost all of them will claim there is no connection. Quoting from the Journal of the American Medical Association: "Diet plays no role in acne treatment in most patientseven large amounts of certain foods have not clinically exacerbated acne".
With years of medical education and clinical experience behind these claims, how can we the simple folks who suffer from acne challenge these statements and think otherwise? The answer is: doubt. Doubt, if its stays in the borders of reason, can open many doors otherwise will stay forever shut. Believe it or not, doubt can change reality. Doubt can cure your acne and doubt can even save your life.
Fact is, countless of acne sufferers have reported that their acne seemed to get worse when they consumed certain foods and saw dramatic positive change over their acne condition when they eliminated the same foods from their diet and when certain foods with specific nutritional value were incorporated into their diet.
So why do dermatologists so stubbornly insist that diet does not cause acne? The answer: you can't make as much money as you could make by selling drugs and over the counters. There is a huge pressure upon doctors coming from the drug and pharmaceutical companies to prescribe expensive medications and lotions that create dependency. The truth is, that your doctor is in a way, a hostage by the trillion dollar drug companies. Did you know that the drug companies, who have no interest in producing something that they cannot control financially, sponsor most medical schools?
The right diet, although not a solution by itself, can, in many cases, dramatically reduce inflammation and even completely clear one's acne (if you're one of the lucky ones who's acne is triggered by allergic response to food). There are less profits for the drug and pharmaceutical companies when promoting a clear skin diet.
The truth is that conventional medications will never cure your acne, simply because they are pre-designed NOT to fix the internal cause of acne. They are pre-designed to deal with the external symptoms of a disease as they create more and more dependency and more dependency means making more money all at our expense and ignorance.
The Theory That Diet Doesn't Cause Acne Is A Myth
The dogmatic theory that diet does not cause acne and that acne is merely an incurable genetic disorder was based upon two dated researches published in 1969 and 1971 that were aimed at studying the connection between diet and acne.
These studies were the foundation of the 'acne symptoms treatment strategy', meaning, because acne is a genetic disease that cannot be prevented, the only way to deal with acne would be to tackle its symptoms (bacteria, inflammation, puss, redness, greasiness), by applying creams, antibiotics, taking prescription drugs and over the counters.
Surprisingly enough, years after the above studies were published, clinical trials and in depth researches experimenting the acne diet link have found that the studies from 1969 and 1971 had came to the wrong conclusions and were in fact seriously flawed.
Recent studies have clearly found a significant connection between diet and acne. It appears that the wrong diet is now thought to be one of the leading acne contributing factors that can negatively affect hormonal regulation and the natural process of toxic elimination, which can seriously aggravate one's existing acne.
Diet Shapes Who You Are (Including Your Acne)
In the same way that crashing waves shape beach cliffs and just like the wind shapes the canyon walls, slowly and methodically over time, so does eating shapes and effects our physic, our internal system, our physical and mental being, from the organ down to the cellular level.
The idea that an object foreign to our body that is inserted by the food that we eat, has no effect on us, or has no impact on chronic conditions such as acne is absurd. Diet is the primary thing that affects and shapes who we are.
Diet has cumulative effect on our bodies, and that includes our skin condition and acne, which is a manifestation of a chronic internal problem slowly shaped and built by the wrong daily dietary choices over the years.
Acne Diet and The Kitavan Islanders
While in the U.S, more than 80% of teenagers between 16 and 18 have acne and more than 17 million Americans suffer from some form of acne, there is an interesting evidence that native people that live and eat in traditional ways, have significantly lower to no occurrences of acne.
In 2002, Dr. Cordain and his colleagues published a landmark study that examined 300 people living in the Kitavan Islands off the coast of Papua New Guinea that showed that none of the islanders had even one blemish on his or her face. Similar to the Kitavans, no case of acne had been observed when the same experiment had been conducted upon the South American Indians called the Ache, living in a remote jungle in eastern Paraguay.
The natives of Kitavan and the South American Indians had no access to the latest over the counters, topical creams or conventional acne medications and they had no dermatologist to consult with. The only vast difference between them and American or European citizens is their diet.
Acne Diet and Sugar: The Sweet Poison
Did you know that sugar is a 100% pure chemical with zero nutritional value? Recent studies have clearly shown a connection between the consumption of sugar and the aggravation of acne.
When you consume any form of refined carbohydrates (white sugar, white flour, white rice) here's what happens: right after you insert that 'sweet poison' into your body, it rapidly spikes up your blood sugar levels. Your body needs to bring those levels down so it secrets a surge of insulin, other male hormones and an insulin-like growth factor called IGF-1. The excretion of these hormones overwhelms your liver and your internal system in general. The excess of male hormones encourages the skin to excrete large amounts of sebum oil: The greasy substance that encourages the p.acne bacteria to grow, resulting in the aggravation of your acne.
Acne Diet and Dairy Products: Got Milk? Got Acne
Milk (all dairy products included) is the most harmful, mucus forming, allergenic and acne aggravating food you can find. If you thought sugar can aggravate your acne, here's another major nutritional player in the formation of acne: behold the miracles of milk. Surprised? I thought so. After years of constant brainwashing by the media, who can blame us for thinking milk is good for strong bones and healthy teeth? The truth is: every sip of milk contains 59 different raging hormones, (which trigger the hyper-production of sebum oil resulting in more acne), saturated animal fat, steroid hormones, dead white blood cells, and cow pus in abundance!
Did you know that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allows 750 million pus cells in every liter of milk (about two pounds) produced in America? Think about it, the next time you pop a pimple.
Scientific studies already point the finger at milk as one of the worst acne aggravating foods: "As pointed out by Dr. Jerome Fisher, 'About 80 percent of cows that are giving milk are pregnant and are throwing off hormones continuously.' Progesterone breaks down into androgens, which have been implicated as a factor in the development of acne...Dr. Fisher observed that his teenage acne patients improved as soon as the milk drinking stopped."
If there's one element you should remove from your diet in the quest for clear skin make it this one. Not only will you see an immediate improvement over your acne, you'll feel a huge weight has been lifted from your body. If you worry about calcium intake, don't! Milk being acidic forming food creates a leeching effect where calcium is taken from your bones to balance the acidity. Milk actually deprives your body from its calcium resources. Green leafy vegetables, nuts and seeds are not only excellent sources of calcium they also have the powers to help you fight your acne symptoms.
Diet Is Only One of The Factors That Cause Acne
Dairy products and sugar are not the only acne aggravating foods. The two above cannot sum up the list of western made acne triggering foods. There are several other foods you should clearly stay away from if you ever wish to clear your acne. The good new is that there are tons of other foods such as essential fatty acids that are not only excellent for your skin, they can actually help you clear your acne, by re-balancing your body and promoting to an acne-free environment.
The right nutrition plays an important part in the complex process of acne formation. When doctors claim there is no link between diet and acne because certain individuals can eat specific foods and get acne while others eat the same foods and don't, these doctors have failed to realize that there are several factors involved in the formation and aggravation of acne and diet is only ONE of them.

Secret Techniques of The Negative Calorie Diet
Weight Loss Articles : of The Negative Calorie Diet by Anne-Marie RONSEN
The first thing that an over-weight should do is seek a doctor to recommend the best weight loss regimen. This will be done after a full physical examination, which leads to the determination of proper weight loss technique. And to lose weight fast and effectively four aspects of life should be changed: what to eat, how to eat, behavior and activity level.
You was downright obsessed with your weight for a long time. And like most dieters, you tried everything - low calorie, starvation, the liquid fasts, ephedra, Atkins, South Beach...you name it, you've probably tried it. Every body knows that those extra pounds spell illness.
10% of your daily caloric intake is used to process foods in your body. It is more about staying fit and remaining healthy to ensure a long, disease free life. Don't confuse WEIGHT loss with FAT loss! You just have to choose the right foods, make exercise a part of your lifestyle and to have a positive attitude. And keep in mind that ALL you eating should be a pleasure.
Whether you're trying to lose weight or just want to eat healthier, you may be confused by the news you're hearing about negative calorie diet. 'negative calorie' doesn't mean that the food has zero calories in it. As a result, many people misunderstand the role that good calories play in a healthy diet.
10% of your daily caloric intake is used to process foods in your body. You don't have to starve yourself - you just have to choose the right foods, make exercise a part of your lifestyle and to have a positive attitude. Don't confuse WEIGHT loss with FAT loss!
The most important objective of any diet is to provide the body with all the essential nutrients for a long and healthful life.
You can basically eat these items in any quantity you want. This diet focuses on eating foods that contain less calories than it takes the body to burn the food source.
So these "negative" calorie foods are foods that take more calories to digest then actual calories in the item of food.
You can eat good tasting nutritious snacks, entrees, desserts, pickles, soups, salads, sauces, etc. with "negative calorie" ingredients without worrying about calories! This simply means that once ingested these "negative calorie" foods provide for enzyme production in quantities sufficient to break down not only its own host calories, but possibly additional calories present in digestion as well. The concept is that if you just eat foods that take more calories to burn than they take in, you will lose weight. For example, an apple that has 65 calories may take 100 calories to digest, which leaves you with a net loss of 35 calories from your body fat.
Here is a brief list of negative calorie foods. Some of these natural foods are asparagus, apple, beet, berries, broccoli, cabbage - green, carrot, cauliflower, celeriac (celery root celery chicory celery, Chile peppers (hot), dandelion, endive, garden cress garlic, lettuce, radishes, grapefruit, lemon, mango, onion, orange, papaya, pineapple, spinach, strawberries, turnip, zucchini, tangerine etc. Challenge yourself to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Avoid refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and white sugar. Keeps your blood sugar levels steady, reduces stress on your digestive system. Choose fruits, vegetables or whole-grain products.

Use the Best-Kept and Best-Selling Collection of EFFECTIVE DIETS & FITNESS eBOOKS to Build a Healthy and Fit Body, Reduce Your Stress, and Bring Lost Opportunities Back to Life...
Your body has to expend energy in order to digest and absorb foods Your results will come in direct proportion to the amount of effort you put in. Negative calorie diet, exercise and positive attitude are the only things you need to lose fat permanently. It is really true, eat to lose weight! And Think Like a Winner!

A Successful Weight Loss Diet Starts from the Inside
Weight Loss Articles : A Successful Weight Loss Diet Starts from the Inside by Chris Robertson
If you're like most women, you've been on a million weight loss diets, from Weight Watchers and Atkins to South Beach and celeb diets. You voraciously read magazines for their weight loss tips and gravitate toward the headlines that promise you can lose weight fast. The chances are good that you have, indeed, lost weight on many of these diets, but the chances are even better that you've gained it all back - plus some. Your skinny jeans become your tight jeans, and then they get tucked in the back of your closet, along with your fantasies of becoming a size 0.
Weight Loss Diet Failure
You've probably bought into the propaganda that says you've failed at dieting; a different - and more accurate - way of looking at it is that the weight loss diet has failed you. That's because most diets focus on short-term changes that result in temporary weight loss, but never tackle the underlying factors that make you put on the pounds to begin with. In other words, they focus only on the "outside" problem - your body - and neglect everything below the surface - your emotions, your intellect, and your relationships.
A diet for summer might work for swimsuit season, but if you don't strengthen your foundations before you lose weight, those Diesel skinny jeans won't fit when fall rolls around.
Turning Failure into Success
In order to lose weight and keep it off, you need a guide who will lead you on an exploratory journey to discover the power and control that you possess. Then, you need to be taught how to harness those powers to achieve all that you want in life - including fitting into your skinny jeans.
You may have been told - either verbally or through insidious advertisements - that if you don't have power over your eating, you have no power at all. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every woman is magnificent, and every woman has mental powers, emotional powers, social powers and physical powers just waiting to be tapped. When you heal your past wounds, and recognize and reinforce the power within you, you have laid the foundation for permanent weight loss.
Practical and Fun
If a weight loss diet is a drag, you'll never succeed in reaching your goals. On the other hand, if you have an empowering program to follow that is also practical and fun, you hold the keys to success. In fact, you can even drop a whole size in two weeks.
The "secret" - if you want to call it that - is to adopt a well-tested exercise program that can instantly fit into your lifestyle. Remember, the success lies in simplicity, clarity, and practicality. Then, you need to adopt an eating plan that works synergistically with your exercise plan to build on the foundation of the inner work you have done in order to embrace your personal power.
Remember that, with the right guide, you can do more than go on yet another weight loss diet; you can truly win in all areas of your life and achieve an outer beauty than matches your inner beauty.

Diet Dilemma - How To Win The Battle Between Protein And Carbs
Weight Loss Articles : Diet Dilemma - How To Win The Battle Between Protein And Carbs by Julia Denham
If you're eating a "well-balanced diet" but are nevertheless still piling on the pounds, you have a right to be annoyed. Your diet's making you fat. Could carbohydrates be to blame?
Exponents of high protein/ low carbohydrate diets like Atkins, the Zone and the South Beach diet think they are. What's more, high protein dieters have proven that you can lose weight fast with their way of eating.
However, nutritionists and researchers say that not only are high protein diets hard to maintain long term, they're not healthy.
So there's the dilemma - should you eat a well-balanced diet and stay fat and perhaps get even fatter, or minimize your carbs, eat a high protein unhealthy diet (according to the experts) and lose weight to become slim and healthy?
The Benefits of Protein
There's no doubt that since protein is the building block of your body, you need protein. Every cell in your body needs protein, and you body makes many components from protein, including enzymes and hormones.
While we all need protein, at certain times in your life you need more. Children, teenagers and pregnant women need more protein, and athletes may need more too.
One of the major benefits of protein in the form of muscle tissue is that it speeds up your metabolism. The more muscle tissue you have, the more calories your body burns. So the skinny get even skinner, which seems a little unfair, but that's why you should exercise, to build muscle.
The Dangers of Protein
High protein diets can be dangerous for people with heart and kidney disease. So as with any diet, before you go on a high protein diet, you need to have a comprehensive health check.
Starting a diet that's high in protein probably won't trigger a disease, but it may reveal a health concerns you already have.
The Benefits of Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates provide the energy your body needs for all bodily processes. The glucose from carbohydrates is required by cells, and by your brain. In addition to glucose, carbs provide vitamins and other chemicals which are needed by your body.
To be active you need carbs, and if your body doesn't get them, it will crave them. This is one of the reasons it's hard to maintain a low carb diet for the long term.
If you're losing weight, you should eat carbs with a low Glycemic Index (GI). Low GO cards help you to control your appetite and fight cravings by releasing glucose slowly, so that the glucose doesn't trigger a high release of insulin.
The Dangers of Carbohydrates
Eating too many carbs will make you fat, because your body stores the glucose you don't need as fat.
Resolve the Dilemma - Eat a Well-Balanced Diet, and Focus on Low Gi Carbs
One of way of resolving the protein or carbs dilemma is by maintaining a well-balanced, normal diet, but switching your carbs to low GI carbs as much as possible.
Low GI carbs, such as those found in oatmeal, not only provide fast energy boosts, but they extend that boost in glucose over several hours.
So add low GI carbs to your diet. You'll find that with minimal changes, you can win the battle between protein and carbs.

The South Beach Diet: What It Is
South Beach Diet Articles : The South Beach Diet: What It Is
What It Is
They may seem similar, but the South Beach diet is more than just a heart-friendly version of the Atkins diet. All the same, they have a lot in common.
Both South Beach and Atkins diets are the creation of medical doctors. The father of the South Beach diet is cardiologist Arthur Agatston, MD, director of the Mount Sinai Cardiac Prevention Center in Miami Beach, Fla.
Related to diet and weight loss Alli, apple cider vinegar, low carb diet, high protien diet, weight loss, metabolism, Mediterranean diet, diet pills, trans fat, BMI calculator, detox diet, diabetes diet, Body for Life
© 2008 WebMD, LLC. All rights reserved.
Both the South Beach and Atkins diets are best-selling diet books. Only someone living in a cave hasn't, by now, heard of Agatston's The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss.
Both South Beach and Atkins diets restrict carbohydrates -- carbs, as diet dilettantes like to say. True, "good carbs" are allowed. But South Beach dieters must say goodbye to potatoes, fruit, bread, cereal, rice, pasta, beets, carrots, and corn for the first two weeks. After that, most of these foods remain strongly discouraged.
Both South Beach and Atkins diets have a more severe induction phase, followed by a long-term eating plan.
The difference, really, boils down to two things:
Fats. The South Beach diet bans unhealthy fats but strongly promotes healthy ones.
Carbs. The South Beach diet doesn't count grams of carbs. The Atkins diet seeks to change a person from a sugar-burning machine into a fat-burning machine. The South Beach diet looks at how much sugar is in a carb. Low-sugar carbs -- those with a low glycemic index (they don't cause the blood sugar levels to rise and fall as quickly) -- are good (this point may sound very familiar to fans of the Sugar Busters diet)
As Agatston says, this means his diet is not -- exactly -- a low-carb diet or a low-fat diet.
What You Can Eat
You won't go hungry. In fact, like the Body-For-Life diet, the South Beach diet promotes strategic snacking. You're not doing it right if you don't snack.
There's no counting calories or strict portion sizes. But there's no gorging, either. The idea is to eat normal portions. To many of us, normal portions will seem small at first. They are enough to satisfy hunger, but no more.
As noted above, sugar-rich carbs are off the menu. These include rice and potatoes, and vegetables -- such as beets and corn -- with high sugar content. Also, there are no pastries or other sugar-filled desserts. And alcohol is forbidden in the induction phase and limited in the long-term diet.
What's on the menu? There are three phases.
The 14-day induction phase bans bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, and fruit. And you can't have even a drop of beer, wine, or other alcohol. The diet promises that after a couple of days, you really won't miss this stuff. As for dairy, two servings of low-fat or non-fat milk, yogurt, or buttermilk are now allowed during this phase.

South Beach Diet Is Hot; Here's Why
South Beach Diet Articles : South Beach Diet Is Hot; Here's Why By John Casey
WebMD FeatureReviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MDIt started out simply enough. Arthur Agatston, MD, a cardiologist, decided to develop an eating plan that would improve the cholesterol and insulin levels of his patients with heart disease. Now, the South Beach diet has grown into something much bigger. That's because the plan Agatston created not only improves cholesterol and insulin levels, but it also has helped many people lose weight.
"We've had people lose anywhere from five to 100 pounds on the diet," says Agatston, who is director of the Mount Sinai Cardiac Prevention Center in Miami Beach, Fla. "That's great, but what it really is good at is improving heart patients' lipid profiles."
In clinical trials, people on the South Beach diet see dramatic reductions in LDL (bad) cholesterol and increases in HDL (good) cholesterol. And they do so without much calorie counting.
Agatston's book about his plan, The South Beach Diet: The Delicious, Doctor-Designed, Foolproof Plan for Fast and Healthy Weight Loss, has become a best seller and it appears to be poised to overtake the controversial Atkins diet in popularity.
"My medical orientation has always been in prevention," he says. "The diet grew out of the frustration in seeing more and more patients becoming obese, having metabolic syndrome and diabetes, and all the heart disease associated with those conditions."
Despite the South Beach diet's glitzy title, Agatston's research and inventiveness is well respected in cardiology circles. Among other achievements, he is one of the developers of the electron beam tomography scan, or EBT, a screening method used to detect coronary artery disease and other diseases. EBT scans for this purpose are given a score on the "Agatston Scale," to gauge the severity of the disease.
"This plan really does meet several criteria for a health-promoting diet," says Cindy Moore, RD, a director of nutrition therapy at The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association (ADA). "It appears to be scientifically based. It is rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein, and it doesn't omit any major food groups."
So what is the South Beach diet all about?
In the first phase of the South Beach diet, which lasts two weeks, you eat normal-sized helpings of lean meats, such as chicken, turkey, fish, and shellfish. Vegetables are also allowed, as are nuts, cheese, and eggs. A salad with real olive oil dressing is fine. Coffee and tea are OK, and lots and lots of water is required.
The Atkins diet differs in that carbohydrates are severely restricted during the initial phase. The South Beach diet instead groups "good" and "bad" carbohydrates based on their glycemic index, a measure of how foods affect your blood sugar.
"The goal is to eat three balanced meals a day, and to eat enough so that you don't feel hungry all the time," Agatston says.

The South Beach Diet Exposed
South Beach Diet Articles : The South Beach Diet Exposed by Sean Bissell
The South Beach Diet is a popular diet.
It was started by a man named Arthur Agatston and emphasizes on the intake of "good" carbohydrates that are "low glycemic." While most dieters consider this diet relatively safe, they fail to look at the other side of the diet, which can actually cause harm to the body.
The South Beach diet exposed, here:
First things first, the South Beach diet consists of 3 phases. Each phase has a different requirement and different time is allocated to them. The 1st phase is aimed to eliminate cravings and hence, the dieter is restricted from eating any carbohydrates. The 2nd phase is similar to phase 1, only that now you are able to include carbs slowly back into the diet, The 3rd and last phase is to make you maintain the new diet by making "smarter" food choices.
It certainly sounds excruciating, especially in the 1st phase. Dieters who have tried on this diet usually give up after the 1st phase thus many do not actually like to use this diet as part of their weight loss plan due to the fear of having to deal with the 1st phase. But because of the numerous praises that the South Beach Diet received, there are still quite a number of dieters who would overlook the critics and the unhealthy negative side effects that the diet entails and go forward to embrace this diet.
#1 Bowel disruption
The South Beach diet's first phase focuses on eating foods that are low in fiber. Some failed to realize that fiber plays a very important function in the formation of stools. It also helps to aid in healthy bowel movements and without it, you can actually experience terrible pain due to constipation and it can worsen into a medical condition if not treated properly. If fiber is not present, the dieter might be forced to take dietary laxatives to compensate the lack of fiber and have a healthy bowel movement.
#2 Just a temporary diet
Many other dieticians have concluded that the South Beach diet is just another yo-yo diet which means that the weight loss during the diet is just temporary. Why go on a diet when you will gain even more weight once the dieting stops? Do I want to try it, NO thank you.
This diet is not really worth trying out. There are plenty of better balanced diets out there that allow you to lose weight without eliminating critical food groups and help you to practice healthier eating habits. One such example is the Mayo Clinic Diet that is based on the food pyramid. An ideal diet should be one that allows you to eat all sorts of foods, ranging from vegetables, to meat, and sugar in moderate proportions. Starving yourself from certain foods will definitely do you no good. So please do take a second look at the South Beach Diet before you jump in to embrace it as you might end up worse than before due to the possible negative effects it brings.

Diet - Does It Really Helps in Losing Weight
Weight Loss Articles : Diet - Does It Really Helps in Losing Weight by Michele Groth
What is a diet? Does a diet really help you lose weight? Are they healthy? People today get confused when they hear the word "diet". They usually think that it always applies to some special plan of eating which is intended to help people lose weight.
Doctors prepare lists of foods intended to accomplish some goal other than weight loss, and the word would be applied to that list of foods. Today the word has come to mean a special list of foods you can or cannot eat if you wish to lose weight. Many of these have achieved almost mystical status and many have their own followings. Just witness how far the Atkins and South Beach Diets have extended themselves in our society. I am sure you remember such exciting diets as those centered on specific foods which practically guaranteed weight loss success - You could eat grapefruit, cabbage soup, or you could enjoy the promised effects of the negative calorie diet. Most have these have faded away for three basic reasons:
1. People got tired of eating the same thing meal after meal. 2. They were unrealistic in their expectations. How could you get cabbage soup when on vacation, or at a business luncheon. 3. Most of the time, they simply didn't work.
While "going on a diet" for a short period may produce a small loss for some people, dieting is simply not the answer to a lifelong weight loss problem. If you are just a few pounds overweight and want to drop a few dress sizes by the wedding in two weeks, a diet just might do the trick, and, for that short time, you will probably be able to stick with it as long as you keep your goal in sight.
The downside of a diet is threefold:
* The effects are not permanent or life changing * It does not contribute to health and vitality * It may actually contribute to weight gain * True, permanent weight loss for health and fitness hinges on three central points: * Regular physical activity * Periods of rest * A sensible diet
When you diet realize that for your health and for permanent weight loss, you must do more. If you do choose to go on a diet, please take a daily multivitamin to help replace the nutrients you are missing.

Why Your Diet Failed
Weight Loss Articles : Why Your Diet Failed by Olly Springs
Some diets succeed. Some diets fail. Some diets that succeed for one person will fail another. The key to being in the first category is recognising why you're diet has failed, and finding out what to do about it.
Some people get lucky, and end up on a diet that works for them first time, but most people either struggle through a difficult diet or give up after a few miserable months of gaining weight.
There are three main reasons why diets fail, and to make dieting as easy as possible, you'll have to overcome all of them.
Top reason without a doubt is hunger.
Many diets are too restrictive, limiting calories and limited what you can eat. The inevitable result is eating food that isn't allowed on your diet plan and is high in calories.
For example, the hardest phase of the South Beach Diet is right at the start, where you're allowed to eat little more than meat and fish.
The same is true with Dr. Siegal's Cookie Diet. Now I do recommend the use of these cookies as a diet supplement to help fight off hunger but the main diet plan restricts you to 800 calories a day. It's almost impossible to stick to.
You won't want to hear it, but exercise is vital.
Reason number two is that many people don't want to exercise. Before you pass out, remember that exercise doesn't have to mean marathon training with Paula Radcliff or cycling 100miles, chasing Lance Armstrong.
Take your dog for a walk, get off the subway a stop early, walk to the café at lunch instead of getting it delivered.
After a few weeks, your body will become accustomed to the extra work, and the majority of people actually find themselves wanting to do more exercise. If you do enough to cause your body to release lots of endorphin, exercise can actually become addictive.
Final reason is patience.
If you expect your diet to get your BMI to 20 in less than a month then think again, and if you want to be ripped off by a 'miracle diet' then go ahead.
Just stick at your diet and give it time. You won't finish your diet any faster than your plan tells you, but you will start changing immediately. The most rewarding part will occur just a few weeks after you start when people start asking if you've lost weight.
If you think you're on the wrong diet, find out what sort of diet might suit you with your free ebook here. If not then stick at it, don't give up, and put a bit of exercise in when you can.

Skinny Changes
South Beach Diet Articles : Skinny Changes by Ryan Patrick
Most people who are on diets are on them because they have problems with portion control and/or proper food selection. So if you have a problem with this, then how successful will you be on a strict diet? In reality, not at all. There are thousands--hundreds of thousands of people who are consistently on diets: the Atkins, South Beach, the Zone diet, the Grapefruit diet, etc. These chronic dieters jump from diet to diet and if they achieved any REAL fat loss then they shouldn't even mathematically exist!
I'm going to outline a few step-by-step approaches to get the most out of your fat-loss plan, while making the minimum adjustments. Hold up! I'm not promising radical fat loss with little to no work! What I am highlighting are approaches to move your diet to one that promotes health while helping you to sustain LONG-TERM fat loss. Many people simply drop their calories and use Hollywood "tricks" for fat loss that only result in temporary weight loss and getting fatter on the rebound.
After the realization that you need to lose fat, and 65% of people do, here are some simple approaches to evaluating your nutritional and exercise habits.
Problem 1: You eat fast food, candy, or other obvious health-deteriorating foods.
Solution 1: Most people can't quit on these foods cold turkey, and it's unrealistic in most cases for people to do so. Instead, make a conscious decision to add more healthy foods to your diet on a daily basis. When you crave that whole sleeve of cookies, eat something healthy first and then dine on what junk you feel like. Adding healthier foods help naturally displace the unhealthy foods. Make a conscious effort to increase the amount of quality food you eat on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Problem 2: You drink too many calories.
Solution 2: There are way too many calorie-free/low-cal drinks for me to go into great detail on this. You need to make water your main beverage. If you are on a limited calorie diet, does it make sense to drink down over 100 calories of soft drink? Absolutely not! It's not filling, nutrient void, and ends up giving you a sugar rush and crash!
Problem 3: You blow the diet and eat (insert trigger food).
Solution 3: Blowing your diet doesn't give you an excuse to continue blowing it. If you miss a meal you need to get back on track for your very next meal. Period. You shouldn't continue to blow it for the rest of the night or the weekend and get back on track Monday. The sooner you get back on, the more likely you are to forget about the cheat, and the sooner you will lose fat again. Don't wallow in self-pity and guilt!
The second solution is to not buy these trigger foods and keep them in your house. If it is in your house, it will get eaten. It's worth repeating, so read it again! When you go to the grocery, do yourself a service and avoid buying these foods. There will come a time to have a cheat meal, because you can't realistically diet all the time. When that time comes go buy the food you want to eat and eat it, without storing it.
This simple guide should give you a practical approach to evaluating your diet and making sensible changes. I rarely see people who get eat enough fruits and vegetables, so if I had to make one change I would encourage people to increase these amounts. If you can master these 3 problems I outlined you'll be much more successful in the long term at managing your weight than 90% of people, which is absolutely something to boast about!
