Weight Loss - The South Beach Diet by Alien Sheng
The South Beach Diet is one in which the user must have the right balance of carbohydrates and fats in order to lose weight. Dieters, who are looking to lose weight, must eat only good carbohydrates and fats. All other forms should be avoided. The diet is made up of three basic phases.
Phase one consists of a 14 day period. The dieter needs to eat three balanced meals, consisting of beef, fish, turkey, chicken, eggs, vegetables, nuts, salad and cheese. You can have a healthy, no carb snack in between your breakfast and your lunch. As with any diet, you need to drink as much water as possible.
During phase 1, you cannot have certain foods that are high in carbohydrates. For instance, rice, bread, fruit, pasta and baked goods are completely off limits. Also off limits are sweets. So cookies, cakes or ice cream should be avoided.
After the 14 day period, you then move into phase 2. With phase 2, there is no set period of time. Phase 2 continues until you have the lost all of the weight you want to lose. Phase 2 will vary from person to person, depending on the exact number of pounds you wish to lose. For some, the phase may only last a couple of weeks. While others, the phase may last several months.
For most people, by the time they have entered the second phase of the diet, they should have lost around 10 pounds. This, of course, all hinges on the notion that phase 1 was followed correctly. Wavering from phase 1 can have a negative impact on the other phases.
During phase 2, weight loss will be slowed down and be more consistent. On average, dieters lose around 2 pounds a week. During phase 2, some foods that were prohibited in phase 1, may gradually be re-introduced. However, they need to be consumed in moderation. Other foods, such as white rice should be avoided all together. Replacing white rice with brown rice will assist in the overall weight loss experience.
After you have lost all the weight you want, you then enter into phase 3. Phase 3 is considered to be a maintenance phase. During phase 3 you are allowed to begin to eat more normally. Many of the restrictions that were imposed during phase 1 and 2 are lifted. However, you need to incorporate some of your diet habits into your every day life.
Adapting to the new way of eating may be difficult for some. However, it has been proven that doing so could dramatically improve your cardiovascular system. Also, it could help to reduce your risk of a heart attack.
As with any diet, results will vary from person to person. Also, is important to see a physician before starting any diet regimen. The South Beach Diet requires the dieter to revamp their way of thinking and eating for a lifetime. But following the diet precisely, it has proven beneficial for the many who have tried it.

The Atkins Low Carb Diet is based on eating very few carbs especially during the first phase. We believe that it's one of the strictest weight loss plans on the market today, and it's probably one of the hardest to follow low carb programs ever created.
There is no mistaking the Atkins Diet for anything other than an extremely strict low carb plan which will sap your energy very quickly, since it only allows 80 carb calories per day during the first phase. That's less carbs than you'll find in a decent sized apple.
This program is not for the faint of heart.
What about the South Beach Diet?
The South Beach diet is also a fairly strict low carb program during the first phase. Though perhaps not quite as strict as the Atkins program. But we also believe that the South Beach plan is too strict a regimen to be practical for everyday dieters, since it's no picnic either and it has the potential to drain your energy during phase 1, with the severely reduced carbs.
For example, we have observed that the higher carb foods (on the South Beach menu) are severely limited in portions during the first phase of the diet -- and this prevents a normal amount of carbs from being eaten during the first phase.
In fact, the only foods which dieters are allowed to eat in "unlimited portions" (during phase 1) are protein foods and super-low-calorie vegetables.
For example, the South Beach menu allows unlimited lettuce during phase 1 --- but yet it limits the portions of "tomatoes" and "onions" and "peanuts".
Additionally, the "sweet snacks" which are allowed on the South Beach menu are limited to a mere 75 calories per day during phase 1.
Can you believe that? Only 75 calories of sweet snacks per day? That's almost ridiculous.
So although the South Beach plan allows so-called "sweet snacks" -- they are limited to just 75 calories per day (that's less calories than a typical cookie contains).
So although the South Beach program is not as strict as the Atkins diet, it's our opinion that both diets are fairly strict -- and we believe that both are difficult to follow for average dieters.
Plus, both diets seem to have no "end" in sight -- since both the Atkins plan and the South Beach diet never allow dieters to return to a normal carb lifestyle (where carbs don't have to be closely watched).
These 2 diets do gradually allow more and more carbs to be eaten as time goes by of course, but even after 6 months dieters are still told to watch their carb intake to some degree each day.
So it's a major lifestyle change which is required by these diets, and many dieters will find it difficult to never be able to enjoy carb filled restaurant meals which can be eaten completely "as served".
So overall we think that both diets are not very practical for average dieters, since we believe that most people will find it difficult to modify their entire lifestyle forever. We therefore strongly recommend against using the South Beach and Atkins programs.

SIMILARITIES
Structure Of Programs
The structure of both the Atkins Diet and South Beach Diet are very similar. Both programs include a 2 week initiation phase that severely restricts the type of food that participants can eat. If you had told me that I could eat dessert on a diet and still lose weight, I would have thought you were crazy -- at least before I learned about the South Beach Diet.
Now I know that it really is possible to enjoy a rich, decadent espresso custard for dessert without cheating on my diet.
For me the word "diet" always meant "die without the foods I love." Not anymore.
Now that I've discovered the South Beach Diet I can eat a variety of great tasting (and satisfying) foods without the reprimand - from myself or anyone else.
Dieting really doesn't have to make you feel like you're doing something wrong if you enjoy the food you eat.
In fact the list of South Beach Diet foods is quite astounding.
Learning to balance the right carbs and fats in your eating plan doesn't have to mean going without a great dessert. The key is finding the right indulgence.
Sure, decadent desserts are basically forbidden during the first two weeks of the South Beach Diet plan, but once you get through this initial deprivation stage, more and more foods are available to enjoy.
I'll admit it, I'm a sweets eater. I can't resist a luscious dessert and thoroughly enjoy sinking my fork (and my teeth) into anything rich and creamy.
So, I was pleasantly surprised - and very relieved - when the South Beach Diet website listed a variety of sweet dessert options for me to try in Phase Two of the program.
Now I knew my South Beach Diet menu would never be boring!
While many of the articles and websites that reviewed the program listed treats such as sugar-free popsicles and sugar-free jello as a dessert option (boring), few mentioned some of my new dieting favorites such as:
* Mocha Ricotta Crème, which is very similar to an Italian Cannoli * Lime Cheesecake * Chocolate Dipped Strawberries * Espresso in a Baked Custard * Poached Pears in Red Wine
Who would've thought I could enjoy two of these luscious snacks every single day without sabotaging my dieting plan?
The only problem with many of these desserts is the time it takes to make them. If you're not into cooking and baking, you may find the preparation time more difficult than those who enjoy creating great recipes.
But even if you're not an expert baker, don't worry that starting the South Beach Diet means saying goodbye to dessert -- it sure doesn't, and that's great news for all the semi-professional dessert eaters out here.

The South Beach Diet forum has been going since May 2004, at least that's the earliest post I can find, it now runs into thousands of posts.
There are many different sections you can post under, from 'Phase 1' and 'Phase 2' of the diet, to 'Success Stories' and 'Recipes and Health' to 'Fitness'.
A typical post from a new starter on the diet is: 'I stumbled upon this website last night and was in awe of all the recipes, support, etc. I actually saved a few of the recipes on my laptop.'
It's in the 'General Chat' section where I found the really good support. This is where you can 'buddy up' with other dieters who are starting at the same time as you. This really gives you a feeling of total support, the kind of support you would only get from fellow dieters.
Also in this section you can post a 'before', 'mid-way' and finally 'goal' picture.
Here are some edited quotes from the forum: 'The first picture was taken about one year before starting South Beach Diet and the other is at half point. I did find it motivating to compare the two because I didn't truly see progess until I did so'.
Another one says: 'I would recommend for everybody to do this especially when they are having trouble with their eating, I know it helped me. Thank you very much! All the support on this forum certainly helps!'

A South Beach Diet related trial done in the Netherlands recently involved feeding 26 males good carbohydrates (complex carbs) for breakfast one day, and then bad carbs (simple carbohydrates) for breakfast the following day.
The results wont seem surprising to anyone familiar with the South Beach Diet. The researchers found that those consuming a complex carbohydrate breakfast (whole grain breads and cereals) felt more energetic and less hungry, throughout the day, than those who ate the simple carbohydrates.
The consumption of the simple refined carbs for breakfast (which the South Beach Diet advises against) resulted in increased glucose and insulin levels, triglyceride levels and free fatty acids.

The makers of popular Oreo cookies and macaroni cheese, Kraft Foods Inc, will be adding a Southbeach Diet range of foods to its line-up this spring. The new Southbeach diet range will include cereals, pizzas, wraps, and entrees.
This news comes as interest in low carb diets, such as Atkins, are beginning to slump. Dr Arthur Agaston, creator of the South Beach diet said that the new range of Southbeach diet foods will help to to clear up a common misconception that the south beach diet is a low carb diet. The new Kraft Foods line up will not be marketed as a "low carb food" range, but rather focus on healthy amounts of the "right carbs" and the "right fats".
